How to unlock Flame Breathing
Reach level 25, collect 10 Demon Horns, and find Flame Trainer Rengu on the rooftop route beyond Mistfall’s red bridge. Give him the materials, complete the training minigames, and defeat the Flame Trainee. Keep a normal katana equipped when you are ready to use the style.
Start from the Bamboo Grove side and head toward Mistfall Harbor. Cross the suspension bridges and water, climb past the Rengu boss area, and continue beyond the long red bridge. Rengu is on a small ledge behind the main wooden house. Set your spawn nearby because training sends you between this cliff and Butterfly Estate.
Requirements and training
| Check | What to bring or do |
|---|---|
| Level | 25 or higher |
| Materials | 10 Demon Horns in the September 2026 build |
| Movement | Double Jump and Wall Climb recommended |
| Combat | Katana and spare skill points |
| Final test | Defeat the Flame Trainee |
Farm horns in the demon cave behind the waterfall near the bear area. After Rengu starts the quest, follow its markers through meditation, push-ups, boulder splitting, aim training, and cup training. These test timing rather than character stats. During cup training, watch one cup closely instead of trying to scan all three after every shuffle.
The Flame Trainee applies burn pressure. Block its opening sequence, move away if the ground remains dangerous, and counter with a short M1 string. Do not squeeze in one more hit. Greed can leave you taking the direct attack and the burn tick together.
Flame moves and their jobs
Open the Skill Tree after beating the trainee. The first Flame node is ready to buy, while later nodes need skill points and style mastery.
| Move | Best job |
|---|---|
| Unknowing Fire | Forward entry and heavy slash |
| Blazing Universe | Aerial movement into a descending strike |
| Flame Undulation | Counter-style defense and close punish |
| Flame Tiger, held | Multi-hit melee pressure |
| Flame Tiger, tapped | Forward projectile pressure |
| Purgatory | Rengoku boss-drop cinematic finisher |
Flame Tiger changes with its input. Hold it when a target is already trapped at close range. Tap it when walking in would be unsafe. Flame Undulation works as a read against incoming aggression, not as a panic button after the opponent has already finished attacking.
Build mastery on regular enemies. Later moves open as mastery rises, while Purgatory comes from the boss rather than the normal branch. Look at the current skill tree for the exact thresholds after an update.
Farm Rengoku efficiently
The Rengoku-style boss drops Flame gear and Purgatory. In the September 2026 build, Purgatory has about a 5% drop rate, with the Flame Katana and clothing on separate tables. Ten failed clears do not guarantee the next one, because every victory makes a new independent roll.
Set your spawn close to the arena, learn the boss’s opening animation, and strike only after a committed move ends. While you are still building mastery, use Flame techniques during each fight so an unsuccessful item roll still advances the style.
PvE rotation
Flame feels best when enemies are grouped in front of you. Confirm with a normal sword attack, tap Flame Tiger to check the range, then close in for its held version or another area strike once the targets commit. Avoid knocking an enemy beyond your next hitbox unless you already have a chase ready.
Burn adds useful pressure in PvE, especially in a party, but you still need to defend. Against bosses, wait through the wind-up, step outside the hitbox, and use one strong Flame action during recovery. Return to neutral before armor or the next sequence begins.
PvP plan
Large Flame animations are readable. Walk forward and vary your timing before using Unknowing Fire. If the opponent dodges early, punish that recovery rather than launching another slow attack. Hold Flame Undulation for opponents who challenge your approach.
Your basic loop is projectile check, confirm, close pressure, defensive reset. Flame struggles against the fastest PvP styles when every exchange begins with an obvious commitment. It becomes much more dangerous when the other player has to move first.
Choose the right Flame Tiger input
The wrong input easily wastes Flame Tiger. A tap sends pressure forward and is safer before a boss or player commits. Holding the button keeps the attack close and produces repeated hits, so save it for someone pinned by M1s, terrain, or another confirmed move.
Practice the versions separately. Stand at the edge of the projectile’s range and learn its travel distance. Then move beside a normal enemy, confirm with M1s, and hold the move for its multi-hit sequence. Starting the held version against a free target gives them a long window to dodge and punish you.
Blazing Universe also needs a planned landing point. Use it after a launcher or against someone fixed near the edge of your range. Flame Undulation covers the reverse situation by punishing an enemy who enters your space. Together, they let Flame alternate between ranged initiative and reactive defense.
Flame gear and clan expectations
The Rengoku clan, Katana, clothing, and Purgatory complete the theme, but each is a separate goal. The base style works without the full set. Do not discard a useful clan or postpone training simply because the perfect name has not appeared.
Once your route is reliable, use this gear loop:
- Set your spawn near the Rengoku-style boss.
- Use Flame techniques during the fight to build mastery.
- Block the committed sequence and punish its ending.
- Check the drops, heal, and repeat the same plan.
Every failed gear roll still moves your mastery forward. By the time Purgatory drops, the earlier nodes and the habits needed to use them should already be in place.
Team rotation
Do not begin a group fight with your largest knockback while teammates are positioning. Wait for someone to hold or stagger the boss, add held Flame Tiger or another area sequence, then stop before the control ends. Keep the tapped projectile for a moving phase or enemies approaching the group.
Burn is extra damage, not a replacement for team timing. If two players use Flame, stagger the largest animations so one person still has a safe punish when the boss recovers.
